Amish Pot Roast: a dutch oven recipe for a deliciously tender roast (1)

A while ago I ordered a dutch oven from Amazon and I was so excited to put it to good use! I chose a recipe called Amish Pot Roast to put this bad boy to the test. Now honestly, I am not really sure how “Amish” this really is. I mean, did the Amish really use soy sauce? Hmmm. At any rate, it’s a downright delicious dinner recipe and very easy to put together! I feel this dish would go perfectly with these Easy Homemade Dinner Rolls as well!

Amish Pot Roast

This Amishpot roast was honestly a huge hit. The whole family loved it. It was packed full of flavor and delicious juices! I highly recommend it if you love super flavorful dinner dishes, it won’t disappoint!

I used a 4.5-pound rump roast for this dish. I did check it about every hour and it was plenty done just under 4 hours. I paired it with some jasmine rice and green beans. I also spooned out most of the onions and the bay leaves from the juice and served that alongside the Amish pot roast for a very delicious meal!

I followed this recipe exactly and it resulted in the dryest roast that I think I have ever had. It was terrible. When I was putting it together, I did worry that the recipe did not call for enough liquid, but decided to trust it. Big mistake.
I used a top round roast that had a nice fat cap on it, which should have been good. I don’t think I will try any more recipes from this site. This was a waste of a good roast and a lot of money.

I have lived all over the world and used this recipe on all sorts of meat (yak, camel, horse…). It is my go to recipe for a roast. The coffee and soy can tenderize any cut of meat 😊. I have many Amish cookbooks and a similar recipe is in many of them.

I’ve made this my pot roast go to recipe for years now. Recipe came fro Marcia Adams cookbook as mentioned above. My family waits for me to make it and can’t get enough of it. I usually cook it on the stove and I do add potatoes and carrots. So delicious.

I have made this recipe once already and have come back to it to make it again, as it was sooooooo delicious the last time we had it!! When I made it the first time, I made a gravy out of the sauce it was cooked in (weird, I know, but so good). I have added potatoes in the dutch oven this time. Thank you for sharing this oh so delicious recipe with us all!!!

Is the coffee added a strong coffee flavor? Amish would add carrots and potatoes. I live in the heart of Amish country.

I’ve seen this before (“Amish” pot roast recipe) floating around. The Amish definitely DO drink coffee, but soy sauce is not typical for them. I live in Lancaster County, PA. and one of our neighbors is an Amish family. Lots of places to buy Amish food, etc. also. I have a couple of Amish cook books as well. And YES, the author DID go into the Amish community to get her recipes for the book. She actually had to adapt some recipes because some of them were cooked on wood stoves and I don’t think too many of us English folks use them for cooking these days. ;-) Other than that soy sauce though, the rest of it sounds okay! Either way, I’m sure it’s delicious!

It’s so funny, I was just printing this recipe out to make it again and started reading the comments. I thought it was interesting that it was said the Amish don’t use soy sauce. I did a search and found this interesting article from the Chicago Tribune. They quote a book author that was welcomed into the Amish community and their kitchens. As it turns out, this recipe and the one she shared in this article, are very, very similar and both use soy sauce :) http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1990-02-22/entertainment/9001150905_1_amish-neighbors-amish-women-plain-people

I often wonder where all of the “Amish” recipes that are popping up are coming from? Having grown up around Amish communities, they are all super quite, and mostly kept to themselves. I never saw any of them openly sharing recipes with people! haha Maybe an Amish cookbook? I also question whether they are even allowed to drink coffee/caffeine? At any rate, this looks great!

I have never met any Amish folk, I do not live in the U.S> but i have read a lot about them and they sure seem to ejoy their coffee.. I believe Mormons do not drink tea/coffee or cola drinks that contain caffeine…

I like the sound of this recipe..I did have a meatloaf recipe that had a BBQ style glaze to pour over just before it finished cooking, it also contained coffee…

If they’re “super quiet” then how is it that you’ve decided you know anything about them? By peering out your window at people?

You should keep your opinions to yourself unless you have some actual knowledge about something.

The author already said she didn’t know how Amish it was. So you’ve added nothing to the conversation.

For what it’s worth 2 years later… Many mistake Mennonites for the Amish. The Mennonites have many of the same or similar traditions but are far less isolated and less strict. From the “English” POV we’d see them as the same but they most definitely are not. Most, but not all, of what we commonly call Amish is actually Mennonite.
